SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER - from Maryland Writers Association will be working with the girls on this badge workshop.
Share a meal with an historical figure, unearth ancient treasures, spend the summer in outer space, or dancing flamenco in Spain – write a novel lets you dream the world your way. As you write descriptions and dialogue, invent situations, and make up feelings, you’ll experience the fun of a novelist’s career: spending time with new friends (characters you’ve created) and in other worlds (those from your imagination). And you’ll end up with something impressive to share in college admissions – a work of fiction you wrote yourself.
1. Deconstruct a novel
2. Create great characters
3. Develop a plot
4. Write at least 20 pages
5. Edit your pages
When I’ve earned this badge, I’ll know what it takes to write a great novel and I’ll have written at least 20 pages of my own.
Prerequisite: Choose a novel that’s at least 200 pages long. As you’re reading, make a note of the emotional arc of the plot. Think of an emotional arc as a journey of the characters’ emotions. Write down the times when the character(s) experience emotional highs, emotional lows, and moments of decision, or pivotal points. What are they feeling throughout the book—what do they begin the story believing, and what do they believe as the story ends? Bring info with you to discuss.
Workshop minimum is 12. Cost includes badge, snack and materials for workshop. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before start time for check-in. We will start promptly.
